SNAP Interactive, the company behind the Are You Interested application on Facebook, is going mobile with its new app that’s now available for iPhone users (get it here). With over 12 million monthly active users on its Facebook application, SNAP is looking to convert a lot of those users to the mobile realm, giving a new meaning to instant gratification. Features for the Are You Interested iPhone application include photo browsing of singles in your area, photo ratings, matches, and contact options via winks and private messages. The most notable use of the Are You Interested mobile app is the ability to see and meet singles that are currently online and in the area. This location-based approach to meeting people isn’t a new concept, even in its application to dating. But it has been associated with a bit of a creepy factor, which is an obstacle nearly every location-based tool must consider when launching a mobile application. But as society and users become more accepting of integrated mobile tools, we’re generally moving towards a trend of location-based awareness as it can apply to a great many things in the physical social realm. I think that leveraging an existing user base from Facebook for the Are You Interested mobile application is the best route to go for SNAP, as it makes the transition from web to mobile easier and takes some of the apprehension away for location-based applications. Another important initiative for SNAP is the monetization of its iPhone application. After figuring out a way to make a profit from its handful of Facebook applications (Are You Interested, Meet New People, and Flirt With Me), doing the same on Apple’s platform is yet another step towards success for SNAP. Upon launch, however, the Are You Interested application for iPhone users is free to download, as the price points for mobile use have not yet been determined.
